Hadith No. 11

Leaving Doubt for Certainty

Translation:

On the authority of Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with both of them), the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his beloved (sweet-scented flower), who said: "I memorized from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): “Leave that which makes you doubtful for that which does not make you doubtful.” [Reported by al-Tirmidhi: 2520, al-Nasa'i: 5711 — Hasan Sahih]

Benefits of the Hadith:

  • 1
A Great Foundation of Religion and Islamic Law (Sharia):
Concise Speech (Jawami' al-Kalim): This Hadith is among the most important foundational principles of Islam.
Origin of Fiqhi Maxim: It is the primary origin of the famous Islamic legal maxim: "Certainty is not overruled by doubt."
Encompassing All Spheres of Life: This principle is not restricted to food and drink alone, but applies to trade, acts of worship, social interactions, and all aspects of human life.
  • 2
Ruling on Permissible (Halal), Impermissible (Haram), and Doubtful Matters:
Clear Halal and Haram: It is not permissible to abandon that which is explicitly and certainly Halal, and it is obligatory to leave that which is explicitly and certainly Haram.
Avoiding Doubtful Matters: When doubt arises in any matter, one should leave it and choose that which brings certainty and peace of mind.
Essence of Piety: Avoiding doubtful matters constitutes the true essence of piety and scrupulousness (Wara').
  • 3
Peace of Mind and Inner Purity:
Distinguishing Truth from Falsehood: The hallmark of truth and Halal is the tranquility and peace of the heart, whereas the sign of falsehood and doubtful matters is anxiety and restlessness. A believer's heart naturally becomes restless upon committing a sin.
Rejection of Misgivings (Waswasah): Islam invites a person to live a life built upon mental peace and conviction, rather than misgivings, doubt, and hesitation.
  • 4
    Safeguarding Religion, Honor, and Morals:
Protection from Harm and Regret: Before undertaking any action, one must acquire firm knowledge so as to avoid regret later.
Blocking the Pathways to Haram: A person who keeps away from doubtful matters safeguards both his religion and his honor, because indulging in doubtful matters gradually leads a person into Haram.
  • 5
Practical Life and Training of the Youth:
Solution to Trials (Fitnah): This Hadith invites every Muslim to engage in consistent self-accountability regarding their actions.
Guiding Light for Youth: It serves as an ideal guiding light, especially for the youth, to avoid questionable companions, doubtful income, and trials.
Conduct of the Early Predecessors: The Righteous Predecessors (Salaf al-Salih) and the Noble Household of the Prophet (Ahl al-Bayt) paid special attention to memorizing Ahadith, acting upon them, and exercising extreme caution even in permissible matters.
