The Religion is Sincerity (Nasihah)
Narrated from Abu Ruqayyah Tamim ibn Aws ad-Dari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The Religion is sincerity (Nasihah).” We asked: “To whom?” He replied: “To Allah, to His Book, to His Messenger, to the leaders of the Muslims, and to their common people.” [Sahih Muslim: 55]
Benefits of the Hadith:
-
1
Importance of the Hadith & Comprehensive Meaning of “Nasihah”:
• Central Pivot of Islam (Madar-ul-Islam): This Hadith is built upon the fundamental principles of Islam, which is why scholars regard it as the core around which the whole religion revolves .
• Literal Meaning of Nasihah: In Arabic linguistics, Nasihah means “purity and sincerity” (such as pure honey separated from wax) .
• Islamic Shari'i Meaning: In Shariah, Nasihah does not merely mean pointing out people's faults; rather, it encompasses deep sincerity, love, total well-wishing, and a desire for goodness for others .
• Comprehensiveness: This principle encompasses all spheres of human life, including acts of worship (Ibadat) and interpersonal dealings (Mu'amalat) . -
2
Establishing Priorities & Hierarchy of Relationships:
• Hierarchy of Priorities: All relationships of faith are outlined in an elegant order: first to Allah, then His Book, then His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم), then Muslim leaders/rulers, and finally the general public .
• Fulfillment of Rights: Absolute sincerity toward Allah and genuine truthfulness/honesty toward His creation are mandatory prerequisites . Every rightful individual must be granted their due rights without usurpation . -
3
Sincerity Towards Allah, His Book, and His Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم):
• Sincerity Towards Allah: Adopting pure Monotheism (Tawhid), avoiding polytheism (Shirk), fully obeying His divine commands, and abstaining from what He has forbidden . This represents true love for the Creator .
• Sincerity Towards the Holy Quran: Maintaining firm faith in the Quran, reciting it regularly, contemplating its meanings, acting upon its rulings, and supporting Qur'anic teachers and memorizers (Huffaz) .
• Sincerity Towards the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم): Believing firmly in his Prophethood, adhering completely to his Sunnah, and prioritizing love for him above one's life, wealth, and children . This love must be free from exaggeration, focusing on defending his Sunnah and respecting his Household (Ahl al-Bayt) and Companions (Sahabah) from the heart . -
4
Rights and Well-Wishing for Muslim Leaders & General Public:
• Sincerity Towards Leaders & Rulers: Obeying them in righteous matters, cooperating with them in virtue, delivering sincere advice with wisdom, concealing their faults, and offering sincere prayers for their guidance and success .
• Sincerity Towards the General Public: Caring for the religious and worldly interests of Muslims, protecting their honor and privacy, fulfilling one's obligations with excellence (including toward parents and teachers), and inviting to reform with wisdom and gentleness (Dawah) . -
5
Cure for Spiritual Diseases & Creation of an Ideal Society:
• Internal Purification: Cultivating constant awareness of Allah's presence in the heart eradicates spiritual diseases such as envy, hatred, malice, and enmity .
• Elimination of Deceit: Sincere well-wishing demands that a Muslim desires for his brother what he desires for himself . Anyone who deceives or harms others lacks this essential Islamic attribute .
• An Ideal Society: Practicing this Hadith fosters an Islamic society established upon mutual love, unity, cooperation, and enjoining good while forbidding evil . Islam is not merely ritual worship, but a complete framework for refined social conduct .
